The Festival tradition of The Nordic Student Choirs roots back to
Linköping in Sweden. The first festival was held in 1987 as a result of
initiative
of local choirs. The next festival took place three years later in
Turku, Finland, and was followed by the festival organised by Norwegians
in Trondheim in
1993. The
fourth was arranged in Copenhagen in the early spring of 1996. In 1999 we
met in Tallinn. The meeting 2002 should have taken place in Uppsala, but
it didn't come true.
The next festival host is Lappeenrannan Teekkarilaulajat (the Male Choir
of Lappeenranta University of technology) from Finland. The festival will
be arranged in April, 21st- 24th, 2005.
The number of participants has increased ever after the first festival. At
the time of the festival in Norway approximately 1000 Nordic student
singers were taking part. Copenhagen hosted already 1400 singers from
Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Baltic countries.
Each of the festivals has had its own image. These festivals have been a
continuous process of trying out possibilities of a giant choir, as well
as making music with top artists and conductors.
The festival is a challenge to the hosting country and to the town and its
inhabitants. We warmly welcome the Scandinavian and Baltic choirs, who
shall bring their own whiff to our Carelian scenery of music, introducing
it in concerts in the town districts.
